Systems engineer (AIT)

Forres, Moray, United Kingdom
Full Time
Mid Level
As an AIT (Assembly, Integration, and Test) Systems Engineer, you will act as the systems engineering representative for AIT, supporting ground support equipment (GSE) development, subsystem and integrated system-level tests, as well as planning and executing mechanical and electrical integration of rocket hardware in close collaboration with the AIT team.

You will work at the intersection of flight hardware, ground systems, and test environments, managing system-level requirements and ensuring our tests are fit for purpose as we transition from component-level validation to stage-level qualification and full vehicle integration.
This role is pivotal to the execution of end-to-end testing, including integrated stage tests and final vehicle preparations for launch.

  Key Responsibilities
  • Act as the interface between systems engineering, fluids, propulsion and AIT teams, ensuring all tools, rigs, and platforms support accurate, safe, and effective testing.
  • Support the definition and validation of test requirements alongside the engineering teams.
  • Develop and maintain system-level test documentation (procedures, V&V plans, configuration control, etc).
  • Participate in test campaigns for subsystem and full stage testing as a systems engineering representative. This will require some hands-on skills to support these campaigns.
  • Plan, coordinate, and oversee the integration of flight hardware across vehicle stages, ensuring interfaces, installation procedures, and system readiness align with flight requirements.
  • Drive Test Readiness Reviews, issue identification, root cause analysis, and corrective action implementation across multi-disciplinary teams.
  • Provide inputs to systems architecture, fluid schematics, FBDs, and operational flow.
  • Support development of MBSE models and systems logic as needed.
Essential Skills and Experience
  • Degree in Aerospace Engineering, Mechanical Engineering, Astrophysics, or related technical field.
  • Experience integrating and testing large mechanical or electromechanical assemblies, preferably in aerospace, automotive, or high-reliability industries.
  • Strong cross-functional communication skills and the ability to work collaboratively
  • Experience or strong understanding of systems engineering principles, including requirements definition, verification, and validation.
  • Familiarity with test engineering environments and safe testing procedures.
  • Excellent hands-on attitude with problem-solving drive—you enjoy making things work, diagnosing issues, and building practical solutions.
  • Ability to work under pressure during live test campaigns with multidisciplinary teams.

Desirable Skills and Experience
  • Knowledge of complex Systems modelling or in depth knowledge of related disciplines such as high pressure fluid systems, pressure vessels, GSE rigging, AIT, etc.
  • Understanding of complex systems, particularly launch vehicle architecture and/or spacecraft.
  • Programming experience in Python or MATLAB is a bonus.
  • Prior experience in startup or agile environments, engine testing, AIT or military/field experience
