Orbex is seeking an experienced and adaptable Mechanical Engineer to act as Technical Lead for a small team of Mechanical Design Engineers.
The Orbex Fluid Systems team is pioneering advanced fluidic component designs to deliver high-performance fluid control solutions for both propulsion and structural systems. Operating in a fast-paced, dynamic environment, we provide rapid, high-quality solutions to support the success of other engineering teams.
The Position
You will have a balance of technical leadership, project coordination, and hands-on design skills. Day to day you will be responsible for supporting the development of fluid system hardware from concept through to flight maturity, with a particular focus on cryogenic valves, piping, and support integrated fluid systems for a launch vehicle.

The Position

Key responsibilities of the role:
- Technical Leadership & Ownership – Assume full technical responsibility for fluid hardware design within your assigned scope. Act as the primary reviewer and approver for designs, documentation, and test plans.
- Project Planning & Delivery – Drive the high-level hardware design schedule, monitor progress, and ensure alignment with overall vehicle program milestones. Coordinate priorities with the Fluid Systems Manager, Systems Engineer, and other Technical Leads.
- Design & Development – Lead the design of cryogenic valves, piping, and support fluid subsystems from concept through detailed design, analysis, testing, and production.
- Team Coordination & Mentorship – Allocate work, provide technical guidance, and ensure engineers have clear deliverables and support. Build and maintain technical competence across the team.
- Requirements & Documentation – Work with systems engineering to establish requirements, generate baseline documentation, and prepare material for critical design reviews.
- Risk & Issue Management – Identify technical and schedule risks early, propose mitigations, and influence the technical direction to meet higher-level project goals.
- Cross-Functional Collaboration – Work closely with manufacturing, quality, and test teams to ensure smooth integration of fluid systems into the launch vehicle.
- Adaptability – Manage multiple projects in parallel, adapting priorities in response to changing program needs.
Qualifications and Experience
You will be proactive, confident in your technical abilities, and driven to deliver space-ready systems on schedule. You will combine strong engineering judgment with collaborative leadership, ensuring team members have clear objectives, the right tools, and the technical support needed to succeed.
- Educational background in Mechanical Engineering or a related field.
- 6+ years industry experience in the design and development of fluidic hardware for complex technical products.
- Proven track record in full product lifecycle management, from concept to production release.
- Strong mechanical design skills, including GD&T, tolerance stack-up, kinematics and engineering drafting standards.
- Experience with cryogenic fluid handling in aerospace or similar high-performance systems.
- Experience defining critical review documentation content for engineering design teams.
- Hands-on experience with assembly, inspection, and quality requirements for high-precision fluid hardware.
- Proficiency in CAD (SolidWorks), FEA, and CFD tools (SolidWorks Simulation, ANSYS Mechanical, Fluent/CFX).
Desirable experience and traits:
- Aerospace fluid system and cryogenic valve design experience.
- Familiarity with ERP systems.
- Knowledge of advanced manufacturing techniques, including additive manufacturing, in propulsion hardware applications.
- Understanding of ECSS, MIL, RCC, and NASA technical standards.
- Experience with scripting and simulation tools such as Python, EcoSim, or AmeSim.
